accordion-plus icon accordion-minus icon

An Exhibition by SuperMonster市 City!

As the last battles of World War II waned, a new conflict was brewing between the world’s two new superpowers, the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Fought through the veil of rhetoric, secrets, and the race to outer space, the Cold War infiltrated every aspect of life, permeating both American and USSR popular culture. Toys, games, comics, and popular media quickly reflected the espionage, space exploration, and growing political tension of the real world.

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
Book by James Lapine

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.

The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. This dark, musical comedy has a few twists and turns as we learn of the consequences of wishes coming true.

Inspired by self-reflection and a strong sense of solidarity, their album, Toward the Fray, documents the Grammy Award-winning group’s remarkable growth as instrumentalists as well as songwriters. The five band members – Travis Book (bass), Andy Falco (guitar), Jeremy Garrett (fiddle), Andy Hall (Dobro), and Chris Pandolfi (banjo) -- wrote the songs on Toward the Fray separately, sending simple phone demos to each other during lockdown. Fueled by friendship and a mastery of their instruments, the 13-track collection feels live, but not necessarily loose, due to a synergy that’s developed over the last 16 years of playing sheds, clubs, and festival stages across the country.

Brittish Playwright Tom Stoppard, who went on to write the screenplay for Shakespeare in Love, takes on a satirical, behind-the-scenes perspective of the two somewhat minor characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet. The play takes place mainly "in the wings" of Hamlet, with brief moments from the original play. Between these episodes, the main characters express their confusion about the events occurring around them, of which they never really receive any direct knowledge.

Keynote: Nickole Brown

Nickole Brown received her MFA from the Vermont College, studied literature at Oxford University, and was the editorial assistant for the late Hunter S. Thompson. She worked at Sarabande Books for ten years. Her first collection, Sister, a novel-in-poems, was published in 2007 with a new edition reissued in 2018. Her second book, a biography-in-poems about her grandmother called Fanny Says, came out from BOA Editions in 2015 and won the Weatherford Award for Appalachian Poetry. The audio book of that collection came out in 2017.

She has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kentucky Foundation for Women, and the Kentucky Arts Council. She was an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for four years and was the co-editor of the Marie Alexander Poetry Series for ten. Currently, she teaches periodically at a number of places, including the Sewanee School of Letters MFA Program, the Great Smokies Writing Program at UNCA, and the Hindman Settlement School.

She lives with her wife, poet Jessica Jacobs, in Asheville where she periodically volunteers at a three different animal sanctuaries. Since 2016, she’s been writing about these animals, resisting the kind of pastorals that made her (and many of the working-class folks from the Kentucky that raised her) feel shut out of nature and the writing about it. Her work speaks in a Southern-trash-talking way about nature beautiful, damaged, dangerous, and in desperate need of saving. To Those Who Were Our First Gods, a chapbook of these first nine poems, won the 2018 Rattle Prize, and her essay-in-poems, The Donkey Elegies, was published by Sibling Rivalry Press in 2020. In 2021, Spruce Books of Penguin Random House published Write It! 100 Poetry Prompts to Inspire, a book she co-authored with her wife Jessica Jacobs, and they regularly teach generative writing sessions together as part of their SunJune Literary Collaborative. Create a wicked trio of sauces your family and friends will rave about!

Merlot Fudge Sauce: This sophisticated sauce is the perfect pairing of two favorites: red wine and chocolate. You can enjoy this concoction drizzled over a sundae, brownie, or draped over a slice of cheesecake.

Vanilla Bean Rum Sauce: Buttery, rich and creamy with vanilla and rum flavors. This smooth sauce is perfect served over fruit or a dip for graham crackers or vanilla wafers.

Bourbon Pecan Caramel Sauce: This award-worthy sauce takes the traditional pairing of freshly toasted pecans and melt-in-your-mouth caramel and kicks it up a notch. With a dash of cinnamon and the sweet, oaky heat of bourbon, it’s a perfectly sinful indulgence you’ll want to eat with a spoon!

Make and Take Home jars of sweet sauces!
